Tiny Titans: Glass Dinos of David White
One might assume we are pretty easy to please when it comes to dinosaur related artwork. But the reality is our obsession with dinosaurs has, in a way, made us dinosaur art snobs. If there was a ceiling on our high expectations, glass artist David White shattered it with his tiny glass dinosaur sculptures.
David’s path to glassblowing was both unique and fortuitous. He began learning his craft at Tulane University, though he wasn’t even an art major. His hobby quickly became his passion, which lead him to an incredible opportunity to be an apprentice for New Orleans glass artist, Andrew Jackson Pollack, post graduation. Which, if you look at Andrew’s animal sculptures, you can understand why they got along so well.
My obsession with David’s glass dinos begins with the stunning colors and hypnotic patterns of the glass. It gives the simplest of his sculptures so much life. But, where some might use the wild colors as a gimmick, his skill as a sculptor with such a fragile material is next level. The best example of his technical abilities can be seen in his dinosaur skeleton sculptures.
